A post card from Emma Goodridge to John when he was having a holiday with his Aunts, Fanny and Sarah at their home, Chalfont in Horsham. The two Goodridge sisters moved into the newly built 34, Depot Road in 1905 and they were followed in residence by May Graham nee Tidy and her husband, Hugh and then their great-niece, Frances Graham. She lived in the house until she passed away in August 1999.

A post card of Lewes Castle, of which there are quite a few in John's album. As Edith lived in Lewes this is not really a surprise as the castle is the most prominent building in the town.

Dear Johnnie, thank you for pie, bring more. Did the Goodridge Butchers business make their own pies or did they buy them in from a supplier? With the addition of John to his father's workforce, might they have experimented with producing pies on site? Intriguing, but an unanswerable question.

This post card is by F.H. Smith of Lewes, another post card from this publisher reveals that he used a printer in Germany to produce his cards.

The message from Edith reveals that she had had boarders stay in her home, Miss H. was leaving. She was hoping that her brother could find her some more customers. By 1904 the Goodridge family had lived and traded in Upper St. James Street for 32 years so would have been well known. From my experience as an independent retailer, the shop would have been a reliable place that the local community could have asked about things like 'do you know where I can get a room'.

John had been to a fair in September. Another event in Brighton in September 1905:

"National Speed Trials. This historic Brighton seafront event has been running since 1905. The event on the first Saturday of September this year allowing spectators to watch over 200 cars and motorcycles travel along Madeira Drive racing against the clock. The organisers are Brighton & Hove Motor Club."

During WW2 two of John's relatives were Conscientious Objectors and were imprisoned in Lewes Gaol because of their belief.

A post card with no message. From the style of hand writing of the address, it would appear to have been sent by John's cousin, Elizabeth Tidy.

"They are all coming here from Gladstone Road" said Edith. Prior to 1905 John and Edith's two maiden aunts, Sarah and Fanny lived at 36, Gladstone Road and in that year they moved to Chalfont in Depot Road. Dave and Lily Streeter along with their son Reginald were probably the 'all' who were going to visit.

The postmark was removed with the stamp on this card.

Thanks for paper and more, but the rest of the message is beyond my ability to read. The card shows that it was written on 13th March and is postmarked 14th.

Edith asked; Shall you have any veal this week? With her father visiting his small farm in Ham Lane, Lewes each afternoon ordering meat from the family butchers shop was not such an odd thing to do.

Edith wanted a black cover exercise book to use as a visitor book for her lodgers. John left school in the summer of 1904 so may have had a spare book or two.
