Another post card from V Mursell, this one to Alice Langford. The message on this card appears to suggest that Miss Marchant & Co was an address that the sender hoped that it could be used as a 'post box' for the Langford sisters.

A card to Florence Langford, an older sister of Alice from V. Mursell who appears to have been on holiday in the Bournemouth area.

A post card to Mr & Mrs Williams at an address in London from WRW. Were the Williams' visiting London, the message would seem to suggest that they knew the church in Brixham, why may they have been downhearted?

A post card to Mr & Mrs Williams with a very brief message. This card was sent to the newly married Archibald and Alice who made the home at 63, Fleet Street in Torquay.

A card to Alice Langford from C. Lee. Was Alice a piano teacher? Alice had an exam in December 1903.

A card from Mabel to her mother, Mrs Easterbrook. I wonder who Norman was?

Note: the building next to the hotel is the Gales Brewery. The business was established in 1847 and closed in 2006 after the business was bought by Fullers.

Compton Castle, Newton Abbott

A card to A Williams from AAW. "How are your pins" it would seem that Mr Williams was have as much trouble getting about as this post card. The GPO took 5 days to deliver it!

The first of the four post marks has the date before the month, not the normal practice.

A message to Mrs Easterbrook from one of her children. The signature of the sender is unreadable, but they were going to arrive at their mother's home the following Friday.

A card to Alice Langford from someone who stayed at the YMCA in Fulham Road. The card was not signed.

A card to Mr A Williams, probably Archibald from possibly GM. I wonder who the lady with the big appetite was!

A card to Al (Alice) Langford from Hetty who was staying with Mrs Jeremy in Haresfield.

A card from S. Browne about a visit with her mother to Spreyton. It would seem that S. Browne was a school teacher.

Brougham Place, North Adelaide

A card with Christmas greetings to Mr Williams Jun. from Will in South Australia. The postmark is incomplete, but does show enough to indicate that the post card was sent on the 20 something of November 1905. The changed delivery address indicates that the Williams family had moved home.

Catholic Cathedral, Portsmouth

A card to Mrs Easterbrook from her daughter, Mabel. There are a number of post cards that were sent to "Spreyton", but how did they arrive in John's collection. He would have been 22 years old when this card was sent an had been working in his father's butchers business for more than 8 years. The evidence of the main body of the collection is that his enthusiasm for collecting cards was between 1903 and 1907 when he saved 340 of the 408 posted on this site. The peak year was 1904 with 143 cards.

Initial research:
Mrs Easterbrook, Elizabeth was born in Holcombe Rogus, Devon in about 1864.
Mabel was born on April 23rd 1889 and married Walter Bovey in 1915. They had one son, Kenneth. Walter who was a Grenadier Guard died in France on December 16th 1918.
She was living in Painton in September 1939.
She died in 1987.

An unsent card from the collection. A seller on Ebay has the same card with a postal date of 1907.

King Edward VII Statue, Reading

A message from Elizabeth Povey to her uncle Matthew and aunt Jane after returning from a visit to Brighton.

The statue stands in front of Reading Station.

Prospect Park, Reading

A post card from Annie Lewendon to her Aunt, Elizabeth Povey. Annie appeared to have a close relationship with her Aunt as she by September 1939 she was living with her and running the newsagents shop at 51, George Street. Was she also Elizabeth Povey's carer? Annie was left 51, George Street in her aunt's will and sometime after this moved back to Reading where she died in 1962.

Natural History Museum, South Kensington

A post card from May Tidy that told of Alice come down soon. There is no Alice among John's cousins, but there are post cards to Alice Langford in the collect. She was born in Torquay in about 1880 and married Archibald Williams in 1905. There are a number of post cards sent to the Williams family in Torquay.

It would appear that this card was posted during the first half of December 1903.

A card from Edith hoping John got home safely, she also reminded him about her order for beef.

A post card from E.W. to Mrs Povey. Was E.W. Mrs Waring who was staying at 51, George Street a month later? Could she have been a relative who was visiting to help look after Mrs Povey when she was unwell?
