Edith King nee Goodridge 1873 - 1918

Sarah Alice Edith only child of John and Sarah Goodridge was born in 1873 with her birth being registered in Brighton during the second quarter of that year. Her parents had moved in the accommodation above the butcher shop at 26 Upper St. James's Street the previous year.

The 1881 Census records that Sarah E.A. was living at the same address with her parents. Sometime before October 1885 Sarah's mother died, no record yet found. On 4th October 1885 her father remarried. His second wife was Emma Povey, a cousin of his first wife.

Sarah gained a half brother with the birth of John Povey on 8th June 1890.

By the time of her marriage to Percy King on August 9th 1899 she was being known as Edith Alice Sarah. This is the name used in the marriage register. She was married at All Souls in Brighton.

The 1901 Census records that Edith and her husband, Percy were living at 62 North Street in Lewes. Her husband was furniture dealer and was an employer (was Matthew Povey working for him?) There is no occupation recorded for Edith.

In 1911 Edith and Percy had a living-in general domestic servant, Sarah Ann Mitchell. Their address is shown as Regis, Abinger Place, Lewes.

Edith died on 22nd June 1918, the probate record for her shows that she was living at the Crown Hotel and her husband was the hotel proprietor.

Edith King Post Cards: these real that she called herself Edie and there was clearly a very regular correspondence between her and her half-brother John Povey.
