John had been to stay with his sister in June 1904 and was going to return home on the following Friday. She also wanted some beef steak & kidney for a pie and mutton for Sunday.

This post card is by F.H. Smith of Lewes, another post card from this publisher reveals that he used a printer in Germany to produce his cards.

The message from Edith reveals that she had had boarders stay in her home, Miss H. was leaving. She was hoping that her brother could find her some more customers. By 1904 the Goodridge family had lived and traded in Upper St. James Street for 32 years so would have been well known. From my experience as an independent retailer, the shop would have been a reliable place that the local community could have asked about things like 'do you know where I can get a room'.
