Lewes Castle from the South West

John had been to stay with his sister in June 1904 and was going to return home on the following Friday. She also wanted some beef steak & kidney for a pie and mutton for Sunday.

June 20th 1904 was a Monday.

The Pells, Lewes

Edith wanted some mutton to cook on Wednesday. In 1903 Edith sent a card to her father, John Goodridge the butcher to order meat so I assume that although her brother was still at school at the time this card was written collecting was of peak interest.

March 7th 1904 was a Monday.

Gale of Eastbourne, Sussex

John had a toothache in November 1903. He lived until he was 90 and still had his own teeth. His second wife, Beatrice remembers a doctor ask John to remove his teeth in the late 1970's, his reply was the will be difficult as they are my own. Another story about John and teeth was that he used to say "that they were trouble when they came and trouble when they left".

The post card is from Raphael Tuck Oilette Rough Seas series.

November 23rd 1903 was a Monday. On that day J.M. Barrie started to write the play that would become Peter Pan.

Bonfire Night in Lewes - 2

It is reasonable to assume that Edith and her husband Percy would have attended the Lewes Bonfire Night events as they lived in the town. Her brother, John would have been just a short train journey from his home in Brighton to Lewes and he was a regular visitor to his sister and the family farm at Ham Lane. The Cliffe Bonfire Society fire site is located at Ham Lane.

Edith was going to visit if it was fine, her step-mother, Emma had been unwell.

November 16th 1904 was a Wednesday. English engineer John Ambrose Fleming received a patent for the thermionic valve, better known as the vacuum tube on that day.

Dear Uncle? As John was aged 13 in September 1903 and his sister, Edith did not have children I think that this card was sent to his Father, also named John. There is no senders name, but the card is postmarked Sutton Courtney. The style of handwriting on some of these cards indicates this one was sent by Fred

As he refers to Mr. J. Goodridge as his Uncle a possible avenue of research to discover the connect would be through John's first wife, Sarah Anne Hylden and her family.
