A postcard from Emma Goodridge to her son when he was staying with his sister in Lewes during August 1917. Her husband was a pupil at the school pictured on this card.

Hurst Road, Horsham

A postcard from Johnnie to his Grandma when he was visiting Horsham in July 1907. A postcard with the same image was sent to John by his auntie Sarah. John's great grandparents ran a dairy business from Bowling Green that was on the south side of Hurst Lane. 

These messages were written 4 years apart and John's hand writing had become more flamboyant over that time away from the influence of the classroom.

The Horsham Recreation Silver Band 1907

A postcard from Mary Goodridge of the Horsham Recreation Silver Band of 1907. John had been to a performance of the band in the summer of that year.

North Chapel, Horsham

A postcard from John's Aunt Elizabeth, she had been to  Hawksbourne and Harnbrook hill on a rainy day at the start of September 1907. Hawksbourne and Harnbrook were farms associated with her brother William.

A card from John's cousin May, it seems that they had both been to visit her brother Fred.

In 1988 one of John's grandson's viewed at a newsagents shop in Queen Street, Horsham when he was looking to buy a business for himself. He eventually settled on a much more successful store business in West Chiltington, south of Horsham.

Rotten Row, Lewes

On 16th May 1907, Edith was concerned about the lack of feed for the ducks. She wrote, "please think of them soon."

North Street, Lewes

A visit to Lewes to see his sister was impending for John and their father (maybe) at the start of November 1907. Edith was going to send a "wire" if her husband returned.

A card from Mary Goodridge, may be, but unsigned.

Calthrop's Cakes & Meals

An advertising message on a postcard John Goodridge would probably have received plenty of material like this with a farm to run. The evidence of the farm action catalogue suggests that he bred Sussex cattle for milk and beef.

East Street, Horsham

Although this postcard is signed "With love from Auntie" the handwriting shows that it was from Sarah Jane.

In a town centre that has seen many developments since the 1970s, it is surprising to see so many building from the early 1900s or before still in use in East Street. The Pub is now a restaurant and the motor engineers is a Satellite TV hardware business.

Way through the woods

A postcard from Sarah and Fanny to their sister-in-law, Emma; "its lovely in Horsham, you should visit more."

The Horsham Stocks

A postcard from Sarah to her brother, he was born in Horsham in 1848 so may have had memories of the stocks. This card is similar to a Francis Frith in style as the typeface is like this card also posted in 1907.

The West Sussex County Times published a photo of stocks being placed in Horsham as a feature when the town was being redeveloped in 1981.

When sent this was a 58 year old photograph of Horsham Old Town Mill. The postcard was sent by Sarah Jane Goodridge, John's aunt.
